The general mechanical properties, which take vital role among designers of products, are the strength of product, life span of product and hardness of the product. However determining the mechanical characteristics is somewhat different and depends on each metal. For instance in case of steel cast the determination of mechanical characteristics is easier and so is determination of mechanical characteristics for standard alloys as they have their specification as standard.
However in contrast for determining the mechanical characteristics of various other alloys it is essential to perform some foundry tests which are set as standard. Thus based on the results achieved one can easily determine the mechanical characteristics of these objects.
If the study is expanded on different metals one can find interesting results of attributes of these metals. For instance in case of forgings the attributes shown are not fixed. The forgings show different attributes when taken various directions. To name one such property could be directional property achieved by forgings as a result of the process of rolling.
To say in detail the process of rolling involves changes in attributes of metal and the main benefit achieved by the process is increased strength in the direction of longitudinal axis. However on the other hand the attributes decrease on the other opposite direction that is in transverse and axial directions. Thus from the above it is, evident that forgings exhibit mechanical characteristics as longitudinal characteristics.
If the user likes to get the mechanical characteristics namely the transverse or axial characteristics then specific process must be undergone and results must be achieved for studying the same.
The two important factors that take its presence in mechanical characteristics are modulus of elasticity and section modulus. Modulus of elasticity refers to the stiffness of metal without taking into account its shape.
This is otherwise termed as young's modulus. When studying this property in aspect of metals it refers to mechanical attribute of the metal alloy taken for study. The above attribute takes its role among all foundries. In fact in all foundries this attribute takes its role in day today operations. An important fact about the attribute of modulus of elasticity is it is independent of geometry of casting.
The other attribute namely section modulus is also a measure of stiffness. However in section modulus the stiffness is measured taking into consideration shape or geometry, which is in contrast to that of modulus of elasticity.
Metal casting is an important area, which embeds the credit of providing the highest geometry in the design and manufacture of component shapes than any other method. The two attributes helps much in review and study process. This is because the modulus of elasticity helps in determining the stress of a metal, which helps to ensure safeness, and the attribute section modulus helps to keep stress within specified range.
Thus the above mechanical attributes plays important role in foundries for achieving quality products with greater efficiency. These attributes along with today’s advancements like viewing in three dimensions and other technologies take greater role in foundries.
